Newcastle United FC – How to Buy Tickets as a Tourist

St James' Park, Newcastle, England

Last Updated: 4th July 2025

1. Club Overview

  • Stadium: St James' Park
  • Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, England
  • Capacity: 52,305
  • Official Site: newcastleunited.com

Now owned by the Saudi Arabian government, Newcastle are set to do a Manchester City over the next few years. Newcastle residents are called Geordies and they are very passionate about their club. It's normal for them to be half naked even in the depths of an English winter. Downing pints of Newcastle Brown Ale, and hating their arch rivals Sunderland, you will be welcomed by this friendly soccer loving city. A night out in Newcastle city center after is well worth doing at least once in your life. Whilst tickets have become harder since the oil money has flowed in, they can still be gotten. Tickets to a match vs Sunderland or even Middlesbrough will be hard to get.

2. How to Buy Tickets

You must be a member to buy tickets for Newcastle United — non-members cannot buy a ticket. To attend the game they must be a member.

There are two types of membership available. Newcastle United have a membership scheme called The Mags (£37 for adults and £20 for juniors aged under 18). Membership gives you access to the home ticket ballot and ticket resale access too. There's also a premium membership available called The Mags+ (£47 for adults. No junior version available) which gives you Priority ticket window access but does not give you a greater chance of securing tickets.

Once you have membership, there are two methods to obtain a ticket. The Mags Member Ticket ballot and the Member General Sale. Most tickets are sold via The Mags Member Ticket ballot. However a small number are also sold via General Sale. In both methods you will have 3 choices when entering the ballot: 1. Family Stand, 2. Rest of the Stadium, 3. Accessible Tickets. Choose option 1 if you are applying as a family (ie you are an adult and a child buying together). Choose Accessible tickets if you are a wheelchair user, or you have a disability. You can also select to have a carer come with you if you need. Everyone else should select the rest of the stadium.

Season ticket holders can also make their tickets available. These are sold on a first come first served basis. These tickets become available once all other tickets have been sold (ie both the Mags Member Ticket ballot and the Members General Sale have been completed). Tickets can become available from 3 weeks before the match until 3 hours before the match starts.

Example Time Frame

  • 28th April: Mags Member Ticket Ballot opens
  • 29th April: Mags Member Ticket Ballot closes.
  • The winners of the Mags Member Ticket ballot lottery are drawn.
  • 30th April: Successful Mags Member Ticket ballot winner window opens (you can select your seats now).
  • 2nd May: Successful Mags Member Ticket ballot winner window closes.
  • 10am 6th May: Mags Member General Sale commences.
  • Match is on 25th May

You can find the on-sale dates throughout the season by checking here: On-Sale Dates

Mags Member Ticket

The club offers a Mags Member Ticket ballot to determine who gets tickets to the vast majority of games. Members who are successful then have a time frame to actually select the tickets they want. Members will be emailed in the morning (UK time) on the day the ballot opens. So please keep an eye out for emails and don't forget to check your spam too. The website will also announce the ballot too. Tickets are digital.

This ballot works by you (you have to be a The Mags member to enter) entering a lottery style draw. There is a small time frame to be able to enter the lottery. Once the deadline to enter the lottery has passed, a random draw will occur. If you are lucky enough to be selected, you only have a 48 hour window to select the tickets and make payment.

It is one entry per membership. Make sure you have strongly linked any family and friends (all of whom must also have a Mags or Junior Mags membership) to your account (via your online ticketing account). One of your group (max 6 members) must be listed as the Lead Applicant (also via your online ticketing account) before the draw. The Lead Applicant will then enter the group into the lottery (make sure you have the consent of each member of the group). When you enter the group into the lottery, ensure that you select the correct age band for each member of the group. If you are successful all members of the group will be seated together.

Member General Sale

This sale is where at a set time, members must log on to the website and join an online queue. Members are held in this online queue until the sale goes live.

However there is no need to log in hours before the official sale time, as queue places are determined in a random order. Once you are at the front of the queue you will have only 10 minutes to complete the ticket sale.

If you fail to access the website to complete the sale within this time, you will go to the back of the queue. It's therefore advisable to not leave your computer/tablet/phone unattended during the live sale period.

3. Ticket Prices

Ticket prices vary depending on the match category and seating location. Newcastle United have two match categories: A and B. A is more expensive and for those top/popular teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs, Liverpool, Sunderland, etc). B is cheaper and for less popular games. You will be more likely to get tickets to category B games.

There are different categories for seats too. There are Category 1, 2 and 3 plus the Family Area and the Safe Standing Area.

We will update this section as soon as it becomes available.

4. Hospitality

There are a few options for hospitality both onsite and offsite. On site options include: Wings Cafe; The Barracks; Park Grill; The Entertainers; Club St. James'; Shearer's. Offsite options include: Gaucho Newcastle and 3Sixty. There are other options too but these are only bookable for season long periods, not for single games. Here is a link to the possibilities: Hospitality Options

Most of the options include a match day programme, before and after talk from ex-men's player, and some kind of food option, as well as a seat.

Wings

This is a bistro style food restaurant. You will have a 3 course meal, a free beer, glass of wine or a soft drink. There are also snacks at half time and a post match hot snack too. You will get a short talk from a former Newcastle men's player. The ticket comes with a padded seat in the Leazes Stand end, centrally in the lower level behind the goal. It's a good location to watch a match from.

The RoofTops

This has an all inclusive bar (including champagne), half time and post-match snacks, and a series of small plate options. The party continues post match with a DJ set. Again there is a former men's player giving a short talk pre and post match. The seat is located in the corner of Gallowgate stand and the Milburn Stand and is a padded seat. You can see the soccer field from the bar area so you can enjoy the stadium. However, just before the game commences, screens will come down due to regulations surrounding alcohol and soccer in England.

The Barracks

This option comes with inclusive street food, live entertainment before and after the game, and a bar. The seats are located on level 4 of the Milburn Stand. The view of the soccer field is great.

Park Grill

This includes a two course grill style menu, a half time hot drink (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc), before and after talk from an ex-men's player. You will be sitting on small tables, so be prepared to chat and meet fellow fans too. You will need to arrive at least an hour prior to the match commencing otherwise you may not get your food. The seats are located in the Leazes stand just below where the away fans sit.

Club St. James'

You will get a three course meal, half time cheese board & hot drink, a post match snack, before and after talk from an ex-player, and will be sitting in the Directors box seating in the Milburn Stand, right behind where the team managers and the teams sit.

The Entertainers

This package is for small groups (min 16 pax – max 20 pax) rather than individuals. It includes a 3 course a la carte dining, half time cheese board, post match snack, a visit from ex-player, and a whole suite for you and your guests exclusive group. You'll be sat right behind the managers and players in the middle of the Milburn Stand.

Shearers

Private suite within Shearer's bar in Milburn stand seating in the corner next to the Leazes stand. You'll get a two course hot fork buffet, a complimentary bar (house wine, beer, cider, soda) for 90 minutes before the game.

Gaucho

This is an Argentinian steak house chain restaurant which is located a few minutes walk away from the stadium itself. It includes a 3 course meal, half bottle of wine (or equivalent for soda, or beer) per person, before match talk from an ex men's player and a seat in the Leazes Stand right behind the goal.

3Sixty

This is actually off-site (i.e. it isn't at the stadium). It's actually located on the 26th floor of Hadrian's Tower which is located 5 minutes walk away in China town in a bar and restaurant. You also get a 3 course meal, a welcome drink and a seat too. You again get a short talk from a former Newcastle United men's player.

5. Where to Sit

St James' Park offers a variety of seating options:

Milburn Stand: Located on the west side, this stand offers premium seating and hospitality suites. The family area is located on this side and into the corner with Leazes End stand. The area is located at the top. This stand is where the manager dugouts are, and the seating area on the middle level is for hospitality tickets. Those seats closest to the soccer field are Category 1 seats.

Leazes End: Situated on the north side. Away fans are situated at the very top of the stand. There are often jokes from visiting fans that they feel as if they are watching from the Moon. Lower levels are category 2 seats.

Gallowgate End: On the south side, this area is popular among vocal fans and provides a vibrant atmosphere. The best area for atmosphere. This entire end is category 2 seating. It's the most popular end. The safe standing area is located in the corner with the East Stand.

East Stand: The smallest stand, offering a more traditional viewing experience. Most of these seats are category 1.

Away Fans: Located in the upper tier of the Leazes End, next to the Moon.

For first-time visitors, seats in the Milburn Stand offer excellent views, while the Gallowgate End provides an immersive fan experience.

6. Getting There

Address: St James' Park, Strawberry Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4ST
Nearest Stations: St James Metro Station (adjacent to the stadium), Newcastle Central Station (15-minute walk)
Matchday Tip: Arrive early to soak in the pre-match atmosphere and avoid congestion. Public transport is recommended due to limited parking.

St James' Park is located near downtown Newcastle.

By Tram

The tram takes about 25 minutes to get from the airport to downtown. The tram is the best method to get downtown. The Green line will take you past Haymarket (https://maps.app.goo.gl/v5KYwUqVxcNdUjhXA) and Monument tram stations (https://maps.app.goo.gl/MZhmX3z49wEbU35u5). The stadium has its own tram stop called St James (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PBGiNuGvepvjBLQ88). Here is the tram network map: https://www.nexus.org.uk/sites/default/files/metro_map_third_a4_final_2018.pdf

By Train

Newcastle has a railway station in the middle of downtown. This is the main train station if you are traveling from elsewhere in the UK. From here there are two ways to get to the stadium: walking (a 10 minute walk), or there is a tram station outside, which connects to a station at the stadium called St James'. The tram station at the train station is called Central Station. Both green and yellow lines serve this station. Both take you to Monument station. You will need to change to the yellow line to get to St James' station.

By Bus

Newcastle upon Tyne has two major bus stations for local and regional services – Haymarket, for services to and from Northumberland and the North, and Eldon Square, for services to and from County Durham and the South. Both are located on Percy Street, a five-minute walk from St. James' Park. To reach the stadium, walk southwest on Percy Street and turn right onto Gallowgate. St. James' Park will become visible on your right. For more information on local bus services, please visit www.nexus.org.uk/bus.

Taxi

The nearest taxi rank to St James' Park is opposite the entrance to Chinatown (outside this Costa coffee: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5LG9k33FofwkvNFX7). Expect large queues after games. Uber is also available in Newcastle.

By Car

There are some parking lots nearby but we don't recommend it due to the expense and congestion. You can check here for parking lots near the stadium:
NCP: https://www.ncp.co.uk/parking-solutions/venues/st-james-park/
Big Parking: https://www.bigparking.co.uk/newcastle-united-parking-at-st-james-park/
Q Parking: https://www.q-park.co.uk/en-gb/cities/newcastle-upon-tyne/poi/st-james'-park/

There is a park and ride scheme in place from Newcastle Great Park and from the MetroCentre (a huge shopping mall). https://themetrocentre.co.uk/centre-information/getting-here This is the best option if you are planning to drive and haven't pre-booked. Around the stadium roads will be closed to traffic. You can drop off people (no parking) on Barrack Road.

Cycling

There are some cycle racks around St James' Park but they are left at your own risk. You should bring your lock too.

Walking

From Monument station it is only a 5 minutes walk down Blackett Street and then continues straight over onto Gallowgate Street. This is probably the best option especially on match days when the tram will be heaving with fans. You can also walk from the railway station area too. The stadium is located close to the junction of Gallowgate, St. James' Boulevard and Barrack Road, just a ten-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station and around five minutes from Monument Metro Station and the city's major bus stations. Simply follow the pedestrian signs located throughout the city centre.

Airport

Newcastle International Airport (code: NCL) is located to the north west of Newcastle. It is well connected to downtown Newcastle. You can use the metro tram (the airport is in zone 3 on the green line). It takes about 25 minutes. You can find more information about getting to/from Newcastle International Airport here: https://www.newcastleairport.com/preparing-for-travel/getting-here/

The airport connects to London Heathrow, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Newquay (Cornwall), and Belfast. It also connects to Dublin, as well as multiple other places within Europe (e.g. Iceland). See here for the destinations: https://www.newcastleairport.com/our-destinations/destination-map/

7. Food, Drink & Pubs

The area around St James' Park boasts several popular pubs and eateries:

Shearer's Bar: Located within the stadium at the Gallowgate Stand end, it offers a range of food (such as toasted sandwiches, pizza, chicken wings, burgers, full English breakfasts, etc. You can find the menu here: Shearer's Food Menu) and drinks with numerous screens showing live sports.

The Strawberry: A historic pub opposite the stadium, favored by home fans.

The Stack: Fan zone for Newcastle fans at the stadium with street food and drinks. https://stackleisure.com/locations/st-james-stack/

Nearby is Eldon shopping mall. It has bagels, Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Costa Coffee, Mexican food, Greggs (popular UK baked goods chain), KFC, Nando's, Pizza Express, etc. https://eldonsquare.co.uk/dine/
